Du'a for Entering and Leaving the House

Two short du'as bracket the doorway. Leaving, the Prophet ﷺ taught a declaration of reliance — the name of Allah, trust in Him, and the admission that no one has power without Him. Entering, the name of Allah is mentioned again over the coming and the going. Both are brief enough to say without breaking stride.

  1. Abu Dawud 5095

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

    Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

    “In the name of Allah; I place my trust in Allah; and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.”

    Said on leaving the house.

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

    Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna.

    “In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we place our trust.”

    Said on entering the house; the report has him then greet his family with salam.
