Verses
سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall
70:1لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel
70:2مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways
70:3تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
(Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years
70:4فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see
70:5إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
Lo! they behold it afar off
70:6وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
While we behold it nigh
70:7يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
The day when the sky will become as molten copper
70:8وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
And the hills become as flakes of wool
70:9وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend
70:10يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children
70:11وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
And his spouse and his brother
70:12وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
And his kin that harboured him
70:13وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him
70:14كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell
70:15نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
Eager to roast
70:16تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth)
70:17وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it
70:18۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Lo! man was created anxious
70:19إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
Fretful when evil befalleth him
70:20وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
And, when good befalleth him, grudging
70:21إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
Save worshippers
70:22ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
Who are constant at their worship
70:23وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged
70:24لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
For the beggar and the destitute
70:25وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
And those who believe in the Day of Judgment
70:26وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom
70:27إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure
70:28وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
And those who preserve their chastity
70:29إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy
70:30فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors
70:31وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
And those who keep their pledges and their covenant
70:32وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
And those who stand by their testimony
70:33وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
And those who are attentive at their worship
70:34أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
These will dwell in Gardens, honoured
70:35فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
What aileth those who disbelieve, that they keep staring toward thee (O Muhammad), open-eyed
70:36عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
On the right and on the left, in groups
70:37أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
Doth every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Delight
70:38كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
Nay, verily. Lo! We created them from what they know
70:39فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
But nay! I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places of the planets that We verily are Able
70:40عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
To replace them by (others) better than them. And we are not to be outrun
70:41فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
So let them chat and play until they meet their Day which they are promised
70:42يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
The day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal
70:43خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
With eyes aghast, abasement stupefying them: Such is the Day which they are promised
70:44
