Surah Al-Mutaffifin (The Defrauding)

Al-Mutaffifin is the 83rd chapter of the Quran, containing 36 ayat. It is traditionally classified as Meccan, though some scholars regard it as among the last revealed in Mecca or transitional to the Medinan period, partly because of its focus on commercial honesty. The surah takes its name from its opening warning against those who defraud in trade — demanding full measure for themselves while shortchanging others. It moves from this concrete injustice to the certainty of accountability, contrasting the recorded fate of the wicked with that of the righteous. The chapter describes two registers of deeds and the sharply different destinies awaiting deniers and believers on the Day of Judgment. It closes by reversing the mockery that arrogant disbelievers once directed at the faithful, showing the believers ultimately vindicated. Its subject matter is honesty, moral accountability, and divine justice.
