Surah Ar-Rum (The Romans)

Ar-Rum ("The Romans") is the 30th surah of the Quran, traditionally classified as Meccan, with 60 ayahs. As a Meccan surah, it affirms God's power and the certainty of resurrection. It is distinguished by its opening reference to the Byzantine Romans, who had suffered a military defeat, and a statement that they would be victorious within a few years, an event later understood by Muslims as fulfilled. From this the surah moves to broader themes: the signs of God evident in the creation of the heavens and earth, the alternation of night and day, human relationships and tranquility between spouses, the diversity of languages and peoples, and the renewal of life in nature as a pointer to resurrection. The surah calls people to reflect on these signs and to turn sincerely toward their Creator.
