Quran Verses About Hardship
The Quran's most quoted promise about hardship is doubled for emphasis: 'For indeed, with hardship will be ease. Indeed, with hardship will be ease' (94:5-6). Trials are expected — 'do the people think they will be left to say we believe and not be tried?' (29:2) — but always within capacity (2:286) and never unseen. These eleven ayahs explain why hardship comes and what Allah promises through it.

- Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5
But lo! with hardship goeth ease
The promise revealed to a Prophet under crushing pressure — with hardship there is ease.
- Surah Ash-Sharh 94:6
Lo! with hardship goeth ease
Said again immediately — indeed, with hardship there is ease — scholars note the one hardship is flanked by two eases.
- Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155
And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast
Trials are announced in advance — fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits — with good tidings reserved for the patient.
- Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286
Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk
The ceiling on every trial — Allah does not charge a soul except within its capacity.
- Surah At-Talaq 65:7
Let him who hath abundance spend of his abundance, and he whose provision is measured, let him spend of that which Allah hath given him. Allah asketh naught of any soul save that which He hath given it. Allah will vouchsafe, after hardship, ease
For financial strain specifically — Allah will bring about, after hardship, ease.
- Surah Al-'Ankabut 29:2
Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction
The question that resets expectations — did you think you would say 'we believe' and not be tested?
- Surah Al-'Ankabut 29:3
Lo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign
Testing is the historical norm — those before were tried, so that the truthful and the liars become evident.
- Surah Al-Baqarah 2:214
Or think ye that ye will enter paradise while yet there hath not come unto you the like of (that which came to) those who passed away before you? Affliction and adversity befell them, they were shaken as with earthquake, till the messenger (of Allah) and those who believed along with him said: When cometh Allah's help? Now surely Allah's help is nigh
Even messengers cried 'when is the help of Allah?' — and the answer stands: unquestionably, the help of Allah is near.
- Surah Al-Mulk 67:2
Who hath created life and death that He may try you which of you is best in conduct; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving
The frame around all difficulty — death and life exist to test which of you is best in deed.
- Surah Az-Zumar 39:10
Say: O My bondmen who believe! Observe your duty to your Lord. For those who do good in this world there is good, and Allah's earth is spacious. Verily the steadfast will be paid their wages without stint
For those who endure without seeing why — the patient will be given their reward without account.
- Surah Al-Balad 90:4
We verily have created man in an atmosphere
Struggle is the human condition by design — 'We have certainly created man into hardship.'

Frequently asked questions
Why does Allah test people with hardship?
The Quran says testing is built into life's purpose — 'He created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed' (67:2) — and that trials distinguish the truthful (29:2-3). Every test comes with a ceiling: no soul is burdened beyond its capacity (2:286).
What does 'with hardship comes ease' mean?
In 94:5-6 the promise is stated twice, and in Arabic 'the hardship' is definite while 'ease' is indefinite — classical scholars read it as one hardship accompanied by more than one ease. Ease comes with the difficulty, not only after it.
Which ayah helps in financial difficulty?
Ayah 65:7 addresses restricted provision directly: 'Allah does not charge a soul except according to what He has given it. Allah will bring about, after hardship, ease' — paired with 65:2-3's promise of provision from where you do not expect.
