Al-Jalil — The Majestic

Al-Jalil is the One of absolute majesty, whose grandeur commands awe from everything that perceives it. Classical scholars distinguish jalal from kibriya' by inflection: jalal is majesty that inspires reverence and a certain fear, whereas beauty (jamal) draws near. The name comes to us through the enumeration; the Quran expresses the attribute as Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram, the Possessor of Majesty and Honour (55:27). Majesty and generosity are named together, so awe of Allah is never severed from hope in Him.
