Surah 'Abasa (He Frowned)

Verses

  1. عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

    He frowned and turned away

    80:1
  2. أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ

    Because the blind man came unto him

    80:2
  3. وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ

    What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)

    80:3
  4. أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ

    Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him

    80:4
  5. أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ

    As for him who thinketh himself independent

    80:5
  6. فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

    Unto him thou payest regard

    80:6
  7. وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

    Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace)

  8. وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ

    But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose

    80:8
  9. وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ

    And hath fear

    80:9
  10. فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

    From him thou art distracted

    80:10
  11. كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ

    Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment

    80:11
  12. فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

    So let whosoever will pay heed to it

    80:12
  13. فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ

    On honoured leaves

    80:13
  14. مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ

    Exalted, purified

    80:14
  15. بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ

    (Set down) by scribes

    80:15
  16. كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ

    Noble and righteous

    80:16
  17. قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ

    Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful

    80:17
  18. مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

    From what thing doth He create him

    80:18
  19. مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

    From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him

    80:19
  20. ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

    Then maketh the way easy for him

    80:20
  21. ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ

    Then causeth him to die, and burieth him

    80:21
  22. ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

    Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life

    80:22
  23. كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

    Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him

    80:23
  24. فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

    Let man consider his food

    80:24
  25. أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا

    How We pour water in showers

    80:25
  26. ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا

    Then split the earth in clefts

    80:26
  27. فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا

    And cause the grain to grow therein

    80:27
  28. وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا

    And grapes and green fodder

    80:28
  29. وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا

    And olive-trees and palm-trees

    80:29
  30. وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا

    And garden-closes of thick foliage

    80:30
  31. وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا

    And fruits and grasses

    80:31
  32. مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ

    Provision for you and your cattle

    80:32
  33. فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

    But when the Shout cometh

    80:33
  34. يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ

    On the day when a man fleeth from his brother

    80:34
  35. وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ

    And his mother and his father

    80:35
  36. وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ

    And his wife and his children

    80:36
  37. لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ

    Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others)

    80:37
  38. وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ

    On that day faces will be bright as dawn

    80:38
  39. ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ

    Laughing, rejoicing at good news

    80:39
  40. وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ

    And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them

    80:40
  41. تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

    Veiled in darkness

    80:41
  42. أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ

    Those are the disbelievers, the wicked

    80:42
