Al-Mani' — The Withholder, the Defender
Al-Mani' is the One who withholds and who defends — preventing what would harm, and denying what He wills to deny. The two senses belong together: what is withheld from a person may be exactly what protects him. Classical scholars pair the name with Al-Mu'ti, the Giver, in the light of the well-known supplication that there is no preventer of what Allah gives and no giver of what He withholds (Bukhari 844). The name reaches us through the enumeration.
