As-Samad — The Eternal Refuge

As-Samad is the One to whom all turn in need while He turns to none — the eternal refuge who is Himself utterly independent. Commentators gather several senses into the word: the One sought in every need, the One who is complete and solid with no hollowness, the One who remains when all else passes. It appears in Surah Al-Ikhlas immediately after Al-Ahad (112:2), so oneness is followed at once by self-sufficiency. Everything that exists leans on Him; He leans on nothing.
